How to Buy a Centrifuge:

  • Needs: What will you be using the centrifuge for? What size and volume of samples will you be centrifuging?

  • Capacity: The capacity of the centrifuge is the maximum number of sample tubes that it can hold. Make sure to choose a centrifuge with a capacity that is large enough for your needs.

  • Speed: The speed of the centrifuge is measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). The higher the RPM, the greater the centrifugal force, which will separate your samples more quickly. However, higher RPMs can also damage your samples, so it is important to choose a speed that is appropriate for your needs.

  • Rotor: The rotor is the part of the centrifuge that holds the sample tubes. There are different types of rotors available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, swinging bucket rotors are the most common type of rotor, but they can only accommodate round sample tubes. Fixed angle rotors can accommodate a wider variety of sample tubes, but they can be more difficult to balance.

  • Features: Some centrifuges come with additional features, such as timers, temperature controls, and alarms. These features can be helpful, but they can also add to the cost of the centrifuge.

Cell Culture Applicaions:

  • Concentrating cells: Centrifugation can be used to concentrate cells by spinning them at high speed. This causes the cells to sediment to the bottom of the tube, leaving behind a more concentrated solution.

  • Pelleting cells: Centrifugation can also be used to pellet cells, which means to collect them into a small, dense pellet. This is useful for preparing cells for further analysis, such as cell counting or DNA extraction.

  • Sedimenting precipitates: Centrifugation can be used to sediment precipitates, which are insoluble particles that form in solution. This is useful for removing precipitates from solutions, such as cell culture media.

  • Homogenizing cells: Centrifugation can be used to homogenize cells, which means to break them down into smaller pieces. This is useful for preparing cell lysates, which are extracts of cells that contain proteins, DNA, and RNA.
