Periodic Acid, also known as Paraperiodic acid or Hydrogen periodate, is the highest oxoacid of iodine. It is used to cleave various 1,2-difunctional compounds; most notably periodic acid will cleave vicinal diols into two aldehyde or ketone fragments.
