Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) ACS (CAS: 1634-04-4) is a volatile organic, colorless liquid with a mild minty smell. The compound has very little solubility in water, and the formula is C5H12O. The product is part of a class of chemicals known as oxygenates, which are widely recognized as increasing the oxygen content of gasoline. It can be employed to synthesize glycerol tert-butyl ether and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) through transesterification with canola oil under supercritical conditions.

MTBE synthesis has been achieved through acid-catalyzed reaction of isobutene with methanol.
